Decision Checklist

How to Choose the Right Hostel

Use this checklist before every booking. A few minutes of research can mean the difference between a great night's sleep and a nightmare dorm experience.

Check the review score (aim for 8.0+ on Hostelworld) Anything below 7.5 is a red flag. Read the most recent reviews — scores can change dramatically with new management.
Verify the location on Google Maps "Central location" in marketing can mean very different things. Check walking distance to transit, food, and your main sights.
Count the beds in the dorm 4-bed dorms offer a more social and quieter experience. 16-bed dorms are cheaper but can be chaotic. Choose based on your priorities.
Check what's included (lockers, linen, breakfast) Some hostels charge extra for linens or lockers. Factor in these extras when comparing prices — they can add $5–10/night.
Look at the common areas in photos A vibrant common room with a bar or kitchen indicates a social hostel. A bare hallway usually means a sleep-only crowd — great for some, boring for others.
Read reviews about noise and cleanliness specifically Search reviews for "clean," "noise," and "smell." These three factors determine the quality of your actual stay more than almost anything else.
Check the cancellation policy Travel plans change. Book hostels with free cancellation when possible, especially for the first night in a new city before you've seen the place.
See if they offer free events or tours The best hostels organize walking tours, pub crawls, and social dinners. These are great for meeting people and often cost nothing extra.

Dorm Etiquette

Be a Good Dorm Neighbor

The golden rule of hostel life: treat others as you'd like to be treated. These are the do's and don'ts every traveler should know.

🔦

Use a torch after lights-out

Pack a small headlamp or use your phone's flashlight in red mode. Turning on the overhead light at 2am is the cardinal sin of hostel life.

🚿

Don't hog the showers at peak time

Shower off-peak (before 7am or after 10pm) and keep it to 5 minutes max. Twenty people share those bathrooms. Everyone has somewhere to be.

🔒

Lock your valuables — always

Always use the provided lockers even if you're just popping out for 10 minutes. Most hostel theft is opportunistic. A padlock removes the opportunity.

📱

Don't play audio without headphones

Phone calls, videos, music — always use headphones in dorm rooms. This also applies to alarm clocks: silent or vibrate mode only in shared sleeping spaces.

🧹

Keep your space tidy

Limit your personal items to your bunk and locker. Spreading gear across the floor, nearby beds, or communal areas is inconsiderate and creates tripping hazards.

🥤

Don't eat smelly food in the dorm

Fish curry at midnight in a dorm is a crime against your bunkmates. Keep food in the common area. Strong-smelling snacks belong in the kitchen, not under the covers.

Stay Safe

Hostel Safety Tips

Hostels are generally very safe, but a little awareness goes a long way. These tips protect your belongings and give you peace of mind.

🔐

Padlock Your Locker

Bring your own padlock — not all hostels provide them. A small combination lock weighs almost nothing and protects everything. TSA-approved is ideal.

📋

Photograph Your Valuables

Before checking in, photograph serial numbers of electronics, your passport, and any valuables. Store these in cloud storage so you can access them if items are lost or stolen.

🌐

Use a VPN on Hostel WiFi

Public hostel WiFi is unsecured. Use a VPN (NordVPN or Proton VPN work well) whenever you access banking or email on shared networks. Never skip this step.

💊

Keep Meds in Your Day Bag

Never put prescription medication in a locker or checked bag. Keep it on you at all times. If you need it, you need it — not when you get back to the hostel.

🤝

Trust Your Gut About Bunkmates

Most fellow hostel guests are wonderful. If someone makes you uncomfortable, speak to staff. Hostels take guest concerns seriously and will move you to another dorm if needed.

📍

Share Your Location

When heading out for the night, share your location with a trusted friend or family member back home. Enable "Find My" or Google location sharing as a baseline precaution.

The Dorm Math
